Interchangeable parts are parts that are capable of being put in place of each other. The picture below is a model of a firearm that uses interchangeable parts. The concept of these parts is critical to success of mass production.

New Tools During the early to mid 1800s milling machines and lathes were invented for making rough cut parts for musket and boring their barrels. This helped the concept of interchangeable parts because it minimized the amount filling and finishing work needed to make barrels and showed that a standard design was useful. The Lines Before Ford was able to make the "perfect" assembly line Ransom Olds created and used an immobile line. He also used this immobile system to create the Model T until 1913 when he made the line move. For more information about these men click the title above.
